COLLEGE ENTRANCE TESTS (ACT/SAT)

College entrance tests are given several times a year according to dates and test centers established by the testing company.  Students can pick up the ACT/SAT test information packets in the guidance office.  These packets contain registration information which will be filled out and sent directly to the testing company by the student.  The packets also contain sample tests, which are valuable for test preparation.  Students are urged to take college entrance tests seriously and prepare for the tests by working through the sample questions.  There are software programs available for purchase in many different stores or online to help in preparation for these tests.  Edison Community College offers a test preparation class each spring for a nominal fee.

The colleges and universities will use this information to help in the admissions process.  Many times academic scholarships are based upon the final test scores.  These tests may be taken more than one time with the highest score in each section becoming the official score.

A typical testing program for college bound students is as follows:

·    PLAN (formerly the Pre-ACT Test) can be taken by sophomores in late November or early December.  The testing will result in information about academic skills and development, personal interest, plans, and needs.  There is a charge for this test (pay at the school so the test can be ordered) and students will be informed about registration in October.

·    PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test) can be taken by juniors in October.  Besides being a good practice session for the SAT I, results, if they meet the annual benchmarks, will qualify a student for National Merit and/or National Achievement Scholar Awards.  This test may also be taken by students as early as the ninth grade.  There is a charge for this test (pay at the school so the test can be ordered) and students will be informed about registration in early September.

·    ACT (American College Test) should be taken by students by April or June of their junior year, and if necessary, in the fall of their senior year.  The ACT is required for students to be considered for the Ohio Academic Scholarships.  This test can be taken as early as a student’s junior high years and is scored based upon grade level.  Registration and fees are sent directly to the testing company.  Pay close attention to deadlines, test locations and dates which can be found on the registration packet.

·    SAT I (Scholastic Assessment Test) should be taken by May or June of the student’s junior year, and if necessary, in the fall of the senior year.  Some colleges require the SAT test rather than the ACT.  Registration and fees are sent directly to the testing company.  Pay close attention to deadlines, test locations and dates which can be found on the registration packet.

·    SAT II (Subject Tests) should be taken by students who anticipate applying to highly selective universities.  Students should take the SAT II in June of the junior year or the fall of the senior year. Some colleges require the SAT test rather than the ACT.  Registration and fees are sent directly to the testing company.  Pay close attention to deadlines, test locations and dates which can be found on the registration packet.

Each student must take responsibility for meeting the test requirements for selected colleges as well as testing dates.  If there are questions, the student should contact his/her counselor.
