This newsletter contains local and national opportunities for students to earn additional funds to help pay for college expenses. Updates are delivered to students, shared with the teaching faculty to post, and made available via the guidance section of the SHS website. Additional opportunities will be posted on the scholarship section of the guidance website, broadcast via morning announcements, or posted on bulletin boards throughout the school. Back to TopHow do I apply for scholarships?Most scholarships now have online applications and associated websites. It is generally best to refer to the website listed for detailed information. Additional resources and applications are often available in the guidance office. Back to TopHow do I apply for college?It has become the norm to apply for college online. Many schools waive or lessen the associated application fee, and application material is often reviewed much quicker than a standard paper application. The easiest way to find a school you would like to learn more about is Google their name. Once at the college's website, look for links that read "Prospective Students" or "Undergraduate Admission." While most schools prefer online applications, it is still possible to apply with a traditional paper application. Generally, students should have applied to the colleges of their choosing by thanksgiving. Many schools have deadlines specific to different programs or offer scholarship opportunities for early applicants. Back to TopHow do I register to take the ACT?Registration packets are available in the guidance office, or it is possible to register online by visiting www.ACTStudent.org. Test dates are also posted on the ACT website. It is important to register by the stated deadline or associated fees will be incurred. Sidney High School's test code is 364682. Back to TopHow do I submit my ACT test scores to colleges of interest?Besides selecting where scores should be sent when taking the ACT Test, students may be required to send test results to other institutions. The student is responsible for sending test scores after the test has been completed. Submission of scores to others can be completed online or via telephone for a small fee. Back to TopWhat is FAFSA?FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Filling out the FAFSA determines how much additional student aid can be received. Back to TopHow can I help my student prepare for the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT)?The OGT is a test created by the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) and given during a student’s sophomore year of high school. Students must pass all sections of the OGT in order to receive a high school diploma. The ODE has made available past tests and practice tests for students and parents to review. Teachers work hard to prepare students for the OGT by meeting academic standards specific to the subject area that they teach. The following documents must be provided: Birth Certificate, Social Security Card, Custody Papers or Intent Form (to be returned within 14* days), and Immunization Records. SHS also requires the student’s previous school submit grades, credits earned, and Ohio Graduation Test scores. If applicable, a copy of the student’s IEP and MFE should be submitted. Students in foster care must submit court order or decree indicating custody and school district responsible for educational expenses. Student may note attend school until completed forms are returned. Back to TopWhat should I be doing in order to play athletics in college?The NCAA has established criteria students must meet in order to be eligible for athletic participation in college. Division I schools now require 16 core courses, while Division II schools require 14 core courses. Students should continue taking rigorous academic classes during their high school years as they discuss future options with their coaches and the athletic department. When students wish to report test scores to the NCAA eligibility center, students must contact their respective test company for results to be sent. Back to TopHow do I set up a College visit?Juniors and seniors are permitted up to three excused visits to colleges during a two-year period. If special circumstances exist, the principal may grant permission for additional college visits. These are excused, work may be made up, and you will receive a "class absence" if the following criteria are met: 1) You must bring a note requesting permission to go on a college visit from your parents to the attendance office before missing any school, 2) You must have the "Teacher Excuse Form" signed by all teachers whose classes you will miss, 3) On the day of the visit, you must check in with the Admissions Office of the college or university. A note from this office must be brought back to the attendance office to verify your visit and validate your excuse. Teacher Excuse Forms are available from the secretary in the guidance office.
